Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday, July 24, 2020 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville for Charles H. “Sonny” Walters.
Mr. Walters, 92, died July 20 at Jerseyville Manor.
He was born May 12, 1928 in Carrollton, the son of the late Charles F. and Jenne (Scroggins) Walters. He married the former Marion Tally in 1950; she died in 2002. After the death of his wife, he found joy in the companionship of longtime friend, Alberta Clothier.
He served our nation with the U.S. Army and was a proud World War II veteran and a former member of the Jerseyville American Legion Post #492. He was employed as a welder at A.O. Smith in Granite City for nearly 26 years, prior to the plants closing. He finished working at Ames Company in Jersey County, retiring after nearly 10 years of service. Caring for his yard was something he truly enjoyed and he did so with the utmost attention to detail. All in all, he simply enjoyed spending time outdoors.
Surviving is a daughter; two sons, Mark Walters and Tony (Patricia) Walters, all of Kane; six grandchildren; two great-grandsons and a sister, Martha Bland of Brighton.
Graveside service will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville with full military honors performed by Jerseyville American Legion Post 492.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
